Sports Medicine Supplier of Athletic TapeIthaca Sports carries sports medicine supplies for the everyday athlete. Injuries can range from minor to catastrophic. Supplies made specifically for the sports athlete allow the athlete to feel better quicker and get back to playing even sooner. Some injuries do require a cast like a broken leg or arm. Many casts can be submerged in water but we find that the skin under the cast can still become irritated. We suggest using a Xerosox cast cover. The cast covers are great for swimming in the ocean (who wants sand under their cast) and even scuba diving. Some common sports injuries are sprains and strains. Some common strains are Achilles tendon strains, quadriceps strains, and hamstring strains. The most common sprains in the body are the ankle and knee sprain. A sprain is an overstretching of a ligament which connects bone to bone. A strain occurs in muscles (like pulling your hamstring). A tendon connects muscle to bone (like the Achilles tendon) Ithaca Sports carries products made specifically for these injuries. One example is a hamstring support brace made specifically for the injured hamstring. A pulled hamstring can be a very debilitating injury and in some cases be season ending. Many athletes prefer to use sports tape prior to games and practices. Athletic tape can be very beneficial for this but will not always keep the ankle stable for an entire game or practice. We suggest if you have a serious ankle stability problem that you should probably use an ankle brace. If you do decide to use tape, we suggest the Johnson and Johnson Coach or Zonas athletic tape. To tape an ankle properly you will need the following supplies: athletic tape, Cramer Tuf Skin, heal and lace pads (with Cramer Skin Lube under them) and Pre Wrap. To remove the tape, we suggest Cramer tape adhesive remover and the Cramer Tape Shark or the Cramer Zip Cut to remover the tape. You can use Lister Bandage tape scissors but we find the other two products to work better. It is possible to use athletic sport tape on knees but we will usually always suggest using a properly fitted knee brace instead. Be sure to ice new injuries as soon as possible. Cramer reusable ice packs, the instant ice packs, or just a bag of ice will do. The reason you always but ice on a new injury is to prevent even further tissue death. When the area swells, it cuts off the blood flow to healthy tissues and cause more tissue death. Besides ice, one should also keep the area elevated (if safe to do so), rest, and use an elastic bandage to keep compression on the area. They also come in double length elastic bandagesVelcro elastic bandages so they do not have to use the elastic bandage clips. Ace bandages are one name brand of elastic bandages. The elastic bandages now come in many sizes including 2 inch, 3 inch, 4 inch and 6 inch. Other items we suggest are from the Bio Freeze products line. The Biofreeze seems to really help with pain and healing. For rehabilitation of the injured areas, we suggest using many of the Thera-Band products that are available. There are many products available and the one you should chose will depend on where your specific injury is. We really like the Thera-Band exercise bands and the Theraband exercise tubing. This company now make specific exercise kits for specific sports.
