Do you advise skipping second chemical treatment and waiting for NITMIX?
Thursday, January 3rd, 2008Here’s a common question
Dear John,
I found lice in my 9 year old son’s hair last Saturday -
I’d been expecting this at some point because his
elementary school has been struggling with an infestation
for years. I gave him the first treatment with Rid
(Piperonyl butoxide & Pyrethrum extract) as recommended
by his principal, who says that she normally advises
against the chemicals but was changing her advice because
the infestation has become so prevalent.
My doctor also found lice in my hair. He prescribled
5% permethrin cream for me which had to be left on all
night! It was horrifying.
Thankfully I found your site and have ordered all your
products. Of course they’re not here yet. Do you advise
skipping the second course of treatment with these
insecticides (in my son’s case, they say to treat again
in 10 days and in my case the doctor said 7 days.)
I hate putting these chemicals all over our heads.
But I don’t want to treat halfway and then have the
reinfestation come back even stronger.
I am one of those mothers who is sent to the moon by
this! That’s why I kept searching for information even
after we started treatment.
I also did the scorched earth cleaning policy, washing
and rewashing linens, shirts, sweaters, pants every time
they touched our skin. Our house has so many giant
plastic bags in it, it looks like we are moving.
THANK YOU for your down to earth advice about that!
Thank you.
…..and our response.
Hi *********
Thanks for your message.
Sounds like you are trying very hard to be responsible
and get your child free of head lice while also being
true to your concerns about the treatment and possible
side effects.
Let’s be very clear on this. Most kids will shrug off
head lice treatments without ill effect.
Some kids may be made sick by them but this is rare and
also very difficult to link directly.
Trouble is, if your child turns out to be super sensitive
then it would be very serious for you and your child. This
kind of super sensitivity can occur with bee stings, ant
bites, shellfish etc,etc and we have all read the stories
and our hearts go out to those people.
Now, we could trade on those fears and say terrible things
about pesticide head lice treatments, and some web-sites do.
We don’t. You are trying your best as a mom and we shouldn’t
trade on your fears to convince you to buy a few bucks worth
of product.
You can do a second treatment if you feel it is the right
thing for your household or I will offer you some alternative
advice about what you can do that will help and will be
effective.
Not doing a second chemical treatment WONT make anything
come back worse, infestation isn’t provoked to be worse
by anything you are doing. The second treatment is to mop
up anything that wasn’t killed by your first treatment.
You can choose to remove anything left by a harmless method
and you will achieve the same result….NO HEAD LICE.
Oh I wish I could throttle the idiot that wrote the advice
about bagging stuff up and cleaning the house! There is no
research that I have ever seen that support this advice yet
it is repeated over and over as if it were proven beyond
doubt….it isn’t. If in doubt read this
http://www.jcu.edu.au/school/phtm/PHTM/hlice/speare-2002.pdf
Just follow the advice below if you want to spend the next
few days doing something effective and harmless to rid
yourselves of any last vestiges of the head lice infestation.
I may publish this reply in our blog as it is a very common
question and answer, we will of course remove any identification
first!
You can do a load of good work right now.
Forget about killing head lice, just think–REMOVE
If you have a fine comb and can locate some oil
like sweet almond, from a health food store, or
even sunflower from a food store you can do a lot
of good right now by removing any larger lice that
may be in the hair.
Don’t use Vaseline, kerosene or mineral oils
they are awful to wash out and dangerous as
they can catch fire!
Just check before you start that the oil you have
will dissolve in your regular family shampoo by
rubbing bit of the oil on your fingers and then
washing with the shampoo.
Work a small amount of the oil into the roots of
the hair while it is dry and then comb gently with
the finest comb you can find.
You will get out an amazing mixture of rubbish
including big head lice and even some eggs.
10-15 minutes combing is fine. Just so long as you
round up all the big fat adult lice.
These are laying between 6 and 8 eggs, per day,
and are creating tomorrow’s lice. These will come
our very easily if you have them stuck in slippery oil.
Shampoo out the excess oil and chill out for a
couple of days then repeat the process.
You are harmlessly removing the lice that can and
will lay down more eggs so you have already started
to eradicate this population.
When you get your order switch to the NITMIX Wet
Combing Aid and this will make the head lice even
easier to get out.
Don’t be fooled by how simple and gently this is; it works!

John Owen
